1906-1989. Nationally recognized professional landscape architect, author and photographer, leader in founding Project GREEN, moved to Iowa City with husband, Clay, when he became UI faculty after their 1928 marriage, the same year she completed a landscape architecture degree at Cornell in Ithaca. A native of Shenandoah, her mother was a member of the Henry Field nursery family and had a 25-year run with a radio gardening show. Gretchen’s first book, “Flower Family Album” (1940), was co-authored with her mother. She also wrote “McCall’s Garden Book” (1968) and was garden editor for both Household Magazine and American Homes.
