Age: 81. The first West High principal (1968-79), local apartment owner, through four decades has substantially impacted local youth and a community of renters. An Indianola native educated at UNI, Iowa State University and Stanford who served in the Army (1951-52), he came to Iowa City in 1968 to head West, where he was popular among students. He held similar positions in Coon Rapids, Chariton and Boone. He left West to manage, along with his wife, Ethel, the family investments in various apartment complexes, ran unsuccessfully for school board (1979), supported international student exchanges, and as apartment association president was active in landlord-tenant issues.
